6 Signs Your Catalytic Converter Is Not Working

Admin • Apr 10, 2018

When it comes to your vehicle, you may not even know what your exhaust catalytic converter is or what it does.

A catalytic converter is a component in your vehicle's exhaust system that works to convert harmful emissions into harmless ones. It takes hydrocarbons and turns them into carbon dioxide and water, carbon monoxide is converted into carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides are converted back into nitrogen and oxygen.

Now that you know why your catalytic converter is important, here are a few signs that it needs either repair or replacement.

1. You Failed Your Emissions Test

Currently, 33 states throughout the US require emissions testing for certain vehicles on the road. The rules can vary from state to state. However, in areas where smog and other pollutants are a major issue, emissions testing is likely to be a requirement for most vehicles.

If your vehicle fails its emissions test, the catalytic converter might be to blame. Carbon emissions in particular are higher whenever your vehicle's catalytic converter is malfunctioning. If this is the case, your catalytic converter is going to need a replacement.

2. Mileage Is Affected

If you start to notice that your vehicle is not getting as many miles to the gallon as usual, the catalytic converter could be to blame. The main issue is that whenever your converter becomes clogged, the airflow through the exhaust becomes cut off. The exhaust then begins to build up in the engine.

This buildup of exhaust means that the engine is receiving less oxygen and has to work harder to build speed. An increase in work in turn lowers your fuel economy. If you notice that your vehicle has lower fuel economy, take a look at the catalytic converter.

3. Your Car Is Stalling

A lot of different possible culprits exist when it comes to a stalling vehicle. Often, the catalytic converter does not come to mind. However, the converter is often a suspect. A clogged catalytic converter is what can lead to your vehicle stalling. A few other things that you may notice include stuttering and bucking.

A good indication that the converter is to blame is if the stalling, bucking, or stuttering happens as the vehicle is accelerating. Whenever your converter is the problem, you will often be able to start your vehicle without any issues but as you go to accelerate that's when the trouble begins.

4. Lack of Acceleration

While stalling, bucking, and stuttering are obvious signs of a failing catalytic converter, other signs exist that may be less obvious. If you find yourself having to press the gas pedal a little harder while driving, you may need catalytic converter repair or replacement.

Not being able to get power at high speeds is a sign of a problem with your catalytic converter. Not being able to accelerate easily can be dangerous when on the road. If you notice this while driving, having your converter examined is something you should consider.

5. Check Engine Light

The check engine light is something that most drivers dread. But if you see it, you know something may be malfunctioning in your vehicle. If you notice this light has come on in your vehicle, the catalytic converter may be the cause. If that light turns on, take your vehicle to your mechanic.

6. It Smells Like Sulfur

The smell of sulfur is unmistakable for most people since it smells strongly of rotten eggs. This rotten-egg smell may be a sign that your catalytic converter has internal damage and that replacement is needed.

For some vehicles, a catalytic converter lasts for the lifetime of the vehicle. For others, it needs to either be repaired or replaced. If you have noticed any of these signs that your catalytic converter may need attention,
